Short Stories

The only short stories I have ever really read were the ones assigned to me in past english classes. I sometimes actually enjoy short stories more than books because they are straight to the point, meaning there isn't a lot of setting up. There is just the meat of the story, which I personally find to be the best part. One of my favorite short stories that I think would be great for this class is called "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson. This story is about a town that has a lottery every year that results the town stoning to death the person who's name is drawn. I like this story because it takes the tradition of providing sacrifice for a good harvest, which is a real tradition is some cultures, and makes it into a story. I enjoy stories that are based on true events. Another story with a similar concept is of a professor that has tuberculosis. When he is betrayed by someone, country, he spreads his highlycontagious disease in restaurants across the country. Both of these sound slightly morbid but I just like the idea of taking a real issue, fact, or concept and turning it into a fictional story.

  2. I aagree with you. I think short stories are great because they are short and to the point. They are usually a good story in a limited amount of words. All of them usually have a message to get across. Also like you, I love reading things that are based on actual events. Espeially if they are crazy and out there. I do not know why but that interests me.

  3. I like short stories more than novels sometimes as well. Good short stories have to create a whole story line with a limited amount of space so they are usually to the point and interesting. I have read "The Lottery" and I thought it was very intriguing. Stories that are really out there catch my attention more than the others. I think it would be a fun thing to read in class.

  4. I agree with you on the fact that short stories can be more enjoyable because they leave out all the extra fluff. I am also a fan of real events. For some reason it makes me a lot more apt to read true stories and buy into them. So I would probably like both of those short stories that you mentioned.

  5. "The Lottery" is a very good piece but I feel like it is over used as an example of a short story. The second story you mentioned seems very interesting. I like the subjects of the stories you talked about.
